Para-Karate #
In the USA Open we have 4 divisions of Para-karate:
- Blind or visually impaired*
- Wheelchair users
- Intellectual disability
- Non wheelchair user with Physical disability with no cognitive impairment.
*Please note - athletes in the blind/visually impaired category are required to perform with blindfolds, which are checked prior to competing.
We have male and female, junior divisions and senior age divisions. Separated by beginner/novice or intermediate/advanced divisions in para-karate kata or weapons.
Kumite in para-karate is not offered.
In order to participate we will need a doctors letter verifying the type of disability/impairment (visual, cognitive and/or physical) and at what level.
Typically the athletes need only two katas, and may repeat if needed.
All other criteria are the same as all athletes.
GI Requirements #
Only white traditional GIs are allowed in signature events. The Karate1 Red and Blue striped GIs are not allowed. The GI must have a USA-NKF patch on it (for domestic athletes only). Flag patches cannot be worn at signature events. Due to SafeSport requirements individuals cannot be changing GI tops within the competition area.
SafeSport #
USA Karate Signature Events are run under the US Center for SafeSport Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies.
